Role transitions

Your experience can take you further. Explore a different role, understand what you need to learn and build a practical case for the move.

Understanding the ask

See the role from the company’s point of view. Understand why they hired you, what they need you to deliver and how development can create value for both of you.

Why they hired you

A role exists to get work done, remove a bottleneck or build capability the business needs. Understand the original problem and the commitments your manager made when they recruited you.

What they expect you to own

Agree the outputs, deadlines, quality standard and decisions within your role. Find out who relies on your work and what they should be able to stop checking as you develop.

How you create an early return

The business wants useful contribution as soon as practical. Start with work you can deliver reliably, reduce chasing and rework, and make progress visible while you learn.

What the investment includes

Salary is only part of the commitment. Recruitment, induction, systems, mentor time and lower output during learning all use capacity. A transition also creates work to cover in your current team.

Why retaining you can make sense

You bring relationships, project knowledge and an understanding of how the business operates. A supported move can keep that value in the company while filling a real need and giving you a reason to stay.

What a workable agreement looks like

Agree useful work, release from current duties, a mentor, learning time and review points. The business commits support and a credible opportunity; you commit reliable delivery, feedback and evidence of progress.

Start with their point of view.

Ask your manager: What did you need this role to solve, what would useful progress look like at the first review, and what would make a development move worthwhile for both teams?

Agree the first review against useful outcomes such as accurate work, reliable handovers, fewer unresolved actions and reduced rework. Allow realistic learning time and count the support needed. Avoid promising a financial return you cannot evidence.

CommercialAdmin or PA to CATurn coordination, reliable records and follow through into commercial responsibility.Explore pathway

What changes in the work

You move from organising information and supporting decisions to preparing recommendations that affect scope, payment, time and contractual exposure. A polished document is only useful when the underlying commercial reasoning is sound.

What transfers and what needs development

Strengths to demonstrate

  • Organisation. Use an action register to show how you identify owners, manage deadlines and close unresolved items.
  • Written communication. Bring an example that separates the issue, supporting facts, decision required and response date.
  • Discretion and relationships. A PA may know the leadership team's decision process well. Project administration may bring stronger drawing and site document exposure. Check your actual experience.

Gaps to bridge

  • Read drawings and specifications well enough to describe a package and identify interfaces.
  • Learn procurement comparisons, progress claims, variations, notices and the difference between cost and entitlement.
  • Understand cost codes, commitments, forecasts, delegated authority and the project's approval process.

Start with a defined assignment

Possible first step: Project administration or assistant CA.

Prepare a comparison for one clearly defined subcontract package using an approved scope and current drawings. Identify exclusions and assumptions, then present a recommendation to the senior CA.

Set the boundaries and entry requirements

The senior CA checks scope and commercial reasoning before anything is issued. No subcontract award, payment certification, contractual notice or instruction that commits the builder without the authorised person's review and approval.

Confirm the builder's entry requirements and whether an assistant CA position or formal construction study is appropriate. Experience in office administration does not establish competence in contract administration.

Rehearse a realistic situation

The cheapest tender excludes temporary access and making good. The PM asks you to place the order before lunch. How do you keep the package moving while protecting the decision?

Explore the reasoning

Flag the exclusions and their likely cost and interface consequences. Compare tenders on a consistent basis, clarify the required scope and escalate the deadline. Prepare the recommendation for the authorised approver; do not quietly assume another trade will carry the gap.

Bring evidence of progress

  • A tender comparison that reconciles scope, exclusions and commercial assumptions.
  • A claim assessment draft linked to measured progress and the relevant contract provisions.
  • A mentor reviewed explanation of one variation, including evidence, notification requirements and the proposed response.

Agree the standard and reviewer before the assignment. Look for repeat performance, sound judgement and timely escalation. Keep workplace records in approved systems.

Build responsibility in stages

Learn and observeObserve a procurement cycle and reconstruct a completed package with your mentor.
Apply under reviewPrepare one live package and a claim assessment for review before issue.
Review the next scopeRepeat the work across a second cycle; agree which tasks still require checking.

Agree the duration with your mentor. Progress depends on demonstrated capability, the work available and any formal requirements.

Make this workable for the business

Build a successor for selected administration duties before the trial. Transfer a defined package of CA preparation work so the commercial team receives useful output while retaining approvals.

Watch for this: Taking the CA workload on top of the entire admin or PA workload. Negotiate what stops, who receives it and when the handover is complete.
CommercialFinance to CAConnect strong financial control with the scope and site events behind the numbers.Explore pathway

What changes in the work

You move from recording and reconciling transactions to understanding what should be committed, assessed, recovered and forecast. An accurate ledger does not establish contractual entitlement or tell you whether the remaining work can be delivered for the allowance.

What transfers and what needs development

Strengths to demonstrate

  • Financial discipline. Reconciliations, accruals, invoice checks and exception reporting can provide a strong starting point.
  • Data analysis. Show how you trace a movement to source records and explain a discrepancy.
  • Control awareness. Use experience with approvals, audit trails and segregation of duties to protect commercial decisions.

Gaps to bridge

  • Understand subcontract scope, measured progress, contract terms and the evidence supporting a claim.
  • Learn procurement, variation entitlement, notice requirements and the difference between a budget and a forecast to complete.
  • Develop site judgement through inspections with the delivery team and discussions about sequence, access and productivity.

Start with a defined assignment

Possible first step: Project cost support or assistant CA.

Reconcile the subcontract account for one package, join a progress inspection and prepare a claim assessment and forecast commentary for the CA to review.

Set the boundaries and entry requirements

Retain a separate authorised payment approver. Do not combine supplier setup, claim assessment and payment release in one unchecked role. Commercial recommendations need contract and site evidence as well as ledger accuracy.

Check the employer's construction experience and qualification expectations. Agree which finance accesses must change when duties change, especially if you previously controlled payments or supplier records.

Rehearse a realistic situation

The subcontractor's invoice matches the purchase order, but the site team says the claimed milestone is incomplete. What do you recommend?

Explore the reasoning

Check the contractual payment basis, actual progress and supporting evidence with the CA. Reconcile differences and prepare the assessment within the applicable process and deadlines. Matching an invoice to an order is only one control.

Bring evidence of progress

  • A subcontract reconciliation explaining commitments, variations, payments and remaining exposure.
  • A draft progress assessment supported by a joint site inspection and relevant contract terms.
  • A forecast commentary explaining the remaining scope, quantities and assumptions rather than copying the budget.

Agree the standard and reviewer before the assignment. Look for repeat performance, sound judgement and timely escalation. Keep workplace records in approved systems.

Build responsibility in stages

Learn and observeFollow one package from subcontract scope to the ledger and site progress.
Apply under reviewPrepare assessments and forecast commentary under commercial supervision.
Review the next scopeShow consistent reconciliation and site judgement across consecutive reporting cycles.

Agree the duration with your mentor. Progress depends on demonstrated capability, the work available and any formal requirements.

Make this workable for the business

Plan the move around finance close dates, allocate the reconciliation handover and preserve payment controls. Use the trial to improve the connection between finance records and project forecasts.

Watch for this: Assuming a cost incurred is recoverable, or that the unspent budget is a credible forecast to finish.
Project deliveryCA to PEBuild technical and delivery judgement on top of your commercial understanding.Explore pathway

What changes in the work

You move towards technical coordination, construction sequence, quality evidence and delivery of the package on site. Commercial experience helps you see consequences, but technical decisions need their own knowledge, experience and authority.

What transfers and what needs development

Strengths to demonstrate

  • Scope awareness. Use your knowledge of inclusions, exclusions and trade interfaces to anticipate delivery issues.
  • Commercial judgement. Explain the cost and time consequences of changing a sequence or accepting a proposed solution.
  • Issue resolution. Bring examples of clear questions, timely escalation and documented decisions across several disciplines.

Gaps to bridge

  • Develop drawing and specification interpretation, construction methodology and discipline fundamentals.
  • Learn inspection and test plans, hold points, nonconformance management and technical queries.
  • Build site experience in work sequencing, constraints, temporary works interfaces and quality verification.

Start with a defined assignment

Possible first step: Package coordination with engineering supervision.

Coordinate the information and readiness register for one work package. Track technical queries, approved drawings, inspections and constraints with the PE and supervisor, while technical decisions stay with competent authorised personnel.

Set the boundaries and entry requirements

Do not approve design changes, temporary works, engineering calculations or departures from specified requirements through a coordination trial. Identify the technical decision maker and required supervision before any engineering service is undertaken.

Check the actual PE job description and the employer's degree and experience requirements. In Queensland, professional engineering services require RPEQ registration or an applicable exception, including direct supervision by a responsible RPEQ. A title change alone does not authorise that work. Other jurisdictions have their own rules.

BPEQ: engineering services and direct supervision.

Rehearse a realistic situation

A subcontractor proposes moving an opening to avoid a clash. It appears cheaper and the pour is tomorrow. What can you coordinate, and who must decide?

Explore the reasoning

Record the clash, drawings and proposed change, identify structural and services interfaces and raise the technical query. Seek the required designer and engineering review, update the approved information and hold point process, and communicate the delivery impact. Price and urgency do not authorise a technical change.

Bring evidence of progress

  • A current readiness register that exposes unresolved information and constraints before work starts.
  • A reviewed technical query showing the issue, relevant drawings, interfaces and required decision.
  • An inspection evidence pack accepted by the responsible PE or quality lead, with unresolved items clearly identified.

Agree the standard and reviewer before the assignment. Look for repeat performance, sound judgement and timely escalation. Keep workplace records in approved systems.

Build responsibility in stages

Learn and observeConfirm eligibility and observe the PE through planning, inspections and issue resolution.
Apply under reviewCoordinate a bounded package with technical decisions retained by authorised personnel.
Review the next scopeReview demonstrated capability and remaining study or experience needs before changing responsibility.

Agree the duration with your mentor. Progress depends on demonstrated capability, the work available and any formal requirements.

Make this workable for the business

Choose a package whose coordination workload needs support, arrange CA cover and name both the delivery mentor and engineering supervisor where required. A project coordinator role may be the right first step.

Watch for this: Treating technical competence as vocabulary that can be learnt quickly. The package and the person's engineering background determine the route and the time required.
CommercialPE to CAConvert delivery insight into disciplined contractual and financial judgement.Explore pathway

What changes in the work

You move from coordinating delivery to preparing defensible commercial positions. Knowing why work changed is valuable; you also need to establish what the contract requires, what the records demonstrate and what authority you have.

What transfers and what needs development

Strengths to demonstrate

  • Technical and site knowledge. Use your understanding of progress, quantities and construction sequence to test claims.
  • Package ownership. Show how you manage interfaces and identify incomplete scope.
  • Contemporaneous evidence. Site records, approved drawings and technical queries can support clear accounts of what happened.

Gaps to bridge

  • Learn the contract's variation, payment and notice processes, including project specific time requirements.
  • Build procurement, negotiation, security, retention and subcontract account management knowledge.
  • Distinguish forecast cost, subcontract liability and potential upstream recovery; understand delegated authority.

Start with a defined assignment

Possible first step: Commercial support on a familiar package.

Prepare a variation assessment and cost to complete review for a package you know, with the senior CA testing entitlement, evidence, calculation and the proposed response.

Set the boundaries and entry requirements

Use draft recommendations until commercial authority is granted. Delivery discussions must not create unauthorised scope commitments, settle claims or waive rights. Keep engineering decisions with the appropriate technical owner during the handover.

Check the builder's commercial competency requirements, access permissions and delegation of authority. Technical experience supports the move but does not replace contract specific training.

Rehearse a realistic situation

You previously directed a resequence to protect the programme. A subcontractor now claims extra labour and delay. How do you assess it fairly?

Explore the reasoning

Disclose your involvement, preserve the records and involve an independent commercial reviewer where needed. Check the instruction, contractual basis, notifications, actual effect and supporting costs. Separate a plausible site explanation from a demonstrated entitlement and valuation.

Bring evidence of progress

  • A variation assessment distinguishing facts, entitlement, valuation and unresolved questions.
  • A forecast identifying remaining scope, quantities, risk allowances and assumptions.
  • A reviewed commercial response with correct approval and issue records.

Agree the standard and reviewer before the assignment. Look for repeat performance, sound judgement and timely escalation. Keep workplace records in approved systems.

Build responsibility in stages

Learn and observeTrace a completed commercial assessment with the senior CA and study the relevant contract.
Apply under reviewPrepare live recommendations on a familiar package under review.
Review the next scopeDemonstrate repeatable assessments and sound escalation across different commercial issues.

Agree the duration with your mentor. Progress depends on demonstrated capability, the work available and any formal requirements.

Make this workable for the business

Hand technical coordination to a named replacement and use your package knowledge to reduce the commercial team's investigation time. Schedule mentor reviews around claim and reporting deadlines.

Watch for this: Assuming the builder can recover every cost caused by a site problem, or accepting a claim simply because the subcontractor's effort was real.
Health and safetyCA to SafetyApply governance and subcontractor knowledge to the controls that protect people.Explore pathway

What changes in the work

You move into identifying hazards, consulting workers, checking controls in practice and supporting the response when conditions change. Complete paperwork cannot establish that a control is effective on site.

What transfers and what needs development

Strengths to demonstrate

  • Governance. Approvals, evidence trails and clear accountability can support a sound safety management process.
  • Subcontractor interfaces. Use your understanding of scope and interfaces to ask who controls a shared work area or activity.
  • Difficult conversations. Show that you can raise a concern clearly, listen and escalate when it remains unresolved.

Gaps to bridge

  • Learn hazard identification, risk assessment, the hierarchy of controls and worker consultation.
  • Build field experience checking controls, coordinating high risk work interfaces and recognising when to escalate.
  • Learn the relevant WHS framework, the company's incident process and the qualification requirements of the target position.

Start with a defined assignment

Possible first step: Supervised WHS coordination.

Join the safety lead on planned inspections, document observations and follow a small set of corrective actions through to field verification by the responsible competent person.

Set the boundaries and entry requirements

The safety lead retains review of assessments, incident decisions and specialist advice. A trial does not authorise you to approve unfamiliar high risk activities or replace competent safety coverage. Follow the site's immediate danger and stop work procedures whenever needed.

Agree the formal WHS training and site experience required by the employer and project before the trial. A course or internal title alone does not establish competence for every hazard or authorise specialist work.

Rehearse a realistic situation

A subcontractor has signed its safe work method statement, but the actual access arrangement differs from the document. What do you do?

Explore the reasoning

Check the actual exposure with the safety lead and follow the site's immediate danger procedures. Consult the workers and responsible supervisor, resolve the control mismatch and verify the agreed controls in the field before affected work proceeds. A signature does not resolve the mismatch.

Bring evidence of progress

  • A reviewed inspection record that identifies the hazard, affected people, existing controls and unresolved gaps.
  • A corrective action record showing ownership, due dates and field verification.
  • An observed consultation or briefing that checks understanding and gives workers a way to raise concerns.

Agree the standard and reviewer before the assignment. Look for repeat performance, sound judgement and timely escalation. Keep workplace records in approved systems.

Build responsibility in stages

Learn and observeConfirm required training and shadow competent safety personnel in the field.
Apply under reviewSupport inspections, consultation and action tracking under direct review.
Review the next scopeReview observed judgement across varied situations before widening duties.

Agree the duration with your mentor. Progress depends on demonstrated capability, the work available and any formal requirements.

Make this workable for the business

Provide defined support to the safety team while preserving competent coverage. Backfill CA deadlines, allow field learning time and fund the required formal development.

Watch for this: Treating safety as document compliance, or promising fewer reported incidents as the trial's success measure. Look for effective controls and honest reporting.
CommercialSafety to CAUse strong risk awareness and field relationships to build commercial capability.Explore pathway

What changes in the work

You move towards managing subcontract scope, payments and financial exposure while retaining the duty to raise safety concerns. Commercial pressure must not compromise effective controls or discourage reporting.

What transfers and what needs development

Strengths to demonstrate

  • Risk awareness. Use examples of identifying an exposure early and clarifying who must resolve it.
  • Site relationships. Worker and supervisor consultation can improve your understanding of what a package actually needs.
  • Evidence discipline. Inspection records and action tracking demonstrate structured follow through.

Gaps to bridge

  • Learn scope preparation, tender comparisons, commercial qualifications and subcontract administration.
  • Build claim assessment, variation, notice and negotiation capability using the actual contract.
  • Learn cost reporting, commitments, accruals, forecasts and payment approval controls.

Start with a defined assignment

Possible first step: Procurement and subcontract administration support.

Help prepare and compare one subcontract package, checking that access, interfaces and required controls are described, then draft the commercial comparison for the CA.

Set the boundaries and entry requirements

Retain competent safety coverage and a clear route for escalating concerns. Do not trade away required controls to close a price gap. Contractual commitments and payment decisions stay with authorised commercial personnel.

Confirm commercial entry requirements and formally hand over any safety responsibilities that require continuing coverage. Record access and approval changes for the trial.

Rehearse a realistic situation

One tender is cheaper because it excludes access protection and waste removal. The team wants to take the saving. What should the comparison show?

Explore the reasoning

Clarify the necessary scope and interfaces, identify who would otherwise carry each cost and confirm the required controls. Present a comparable total position, including assumptions and unresolved risks, for the authorised decision maker.

Bring evidence of progress

  • A scope comparison that exposes exclusions and allocates interfaces clearly.
  • A reviewed claim or variation assessment with the commercial reasoning explained.
  • A package forecast that includes the agreed scope and control costs.

Agree the standard and reviewer before the assignment. Look for repeat performance, sound judgement and timely escalation. Keep workplace records in approved systems.

What changes in the work

You move from directing work and coordinating crews to testing the scope, evidence and contractual basis of commercial recommendations. Your site experience is valuable, especially when you can turn it into clear written reasoning.

What transfers and what needs development

Strengths to demonstrate

  • Construction reality. Use your understanding of quantities, access, sequence and productivity to test assumptions.
  • Subcontractor knowledge. Bring examples of resolving trade interfaces and spotting missing work.
  • Progress judgement. Site records and measurements can support fair and defensible claim assessments.

Gaps to bridge

  • Develop contract reading, formal notices, variation assessment and approval discipline.
  • Build spreadsheet, cost system and written recommendation skills using real project records.
  • Learn procurement, forecasts and the separation of instructed work, actual cost and entitlement.

Start with a defined assignment

Possible first step: Package measurement and commercial support.

Jointly measure a familiar package with the CA, reconcile the claimed progress and prepare a draft assessment with drawings, quantities, photos and unresolved questions.

Set the boundaries and entry requirements

Avoid informal promises about payment, variations or scope. The authorised person reviews communications that could commit the builder. Nominate a replacement for supervision duties and preserve required site coverage.

Check the employer's CA requirements and the coverage obligations attached to your current supervisory position. Trial the office and reporting aspects of the role as well as the package work.

Rehearse a realistic situation

A subcontractor says, 'You saw us do the extra work, so just approve it.' You did see it. What else do you need?

Explore the reasoning

Record what was done and why, then check the instruction, subcontract scope, notification process, quantities and rates with the CA. Acknowledge the facts without promising entitlement or payment before review.

Bring evidence of progress

  • A measured claim assessment that another reviewer can follow and reproduce.
  • A written variation recommendation distinguishing the site facts from the contract position.
  • An updated package forecast with remaining quantities and productivity assumptions.

Agree the standard and reviewer before the assignment. Look for repeat performance, sound judgement and timely escalation. Keep workplace records in approved systems.

Watch for this: Being pulled back to solve every site issue while your commercial deadlines remain unchanged.
CommercialHR to CABring people judgement and process discipline into project commercial work.Explore pathway

What changes in the work

You move from employment and people processes to the builder's construction contracts and subcontract accounts. Communication and fair process transfer well; construction scope, financial analysis and contract administration need deliberate development.

What transfers and what needs development

Strengths to demonstrate

  • People judgement. Use examples of listening, negotiating and managing difficult conversations fairly.
  • Process discipline. Show how you manage confidential records, approvals and sensitive deadlines.
  • Written reasoning. Bring work that explains the facts, options and recommended next step clearly.

Gaps to bridge

  • Learn drawings, specifications, trade scope and the sequence of project delivery.
  • Build numeracy and practical skill in tender comparisons, claim assessments and cost forecasts.
  • Study the actual construction contract, notices, variations, commercial approvals and evidence requirements.

Start with a defined assignment

Possible first step: Project administration with commercial mentoring.

Work with a CA to prepare a scope clarification register and tender comparison for a small, clearly defined package, supported by site observation and drawing review.

Set the boundaries and entry requirements

Employment expertise does not establish construction contract expertise. Keep employee information separate from project commercial records and remove unnecessary HR access when duties change. Commercial issue and approval rights stay with authorised personnel.

Check construction study and entry requirements with the receiving manager. Agree a staged position that reflects your actual site, numerical and contract experience.

Rehearse a realistic situation

A subcontractor manager is persuasive and promises to resolve the exclusions later. The tender comparison still contains gaps. How should you proceed?

Explore the reasoning

Maintain the relationship while documenting the unresolved scope and commercial qualifications. Seek written clarification, assess the consequences and present the remaining risk to the authorised approver. Good rapport supports a decision; it does not supply the missing evidence.

Bring evidence of progress

  • A scope clarification register showing ownership and resolution of gaps.
  • A numerically checked tender comparison with a defensible recommendation.
  • A reviewed claim assessment that connects contract provisions, site progress and calculations.

Agree the standard and reviewer before the assignment. Look for repeat performance, sound judgement and timely escalation. Keep workplace records in approved systems.

Build responsibility in stages

Learn and observeBuild construction and numerical foundations through site exposure and worked examples.
Apply under reviewPrepare a bounded procurement package under CA review.

Agree the duration with your mentor. Progress depends on demonstrated capability, the work available and any formal requirements.

Make this workable for the business

Plan cover for recruitment, case work and payroll interfaces. Use the trial to add reliable procurement preparation while protecting confidential employee records.

Watch for this: Underestimating the numerical and technical learning because both roles involve relationships and contracts.
People and cultureCA to HRApply project understanding to workforce planning and a better employee experience.Explore pathway

What changes in the work

You move into decisions and processes affecting people's employment, development and wellbeing. Commercial negotiation experience can help, but HR requires its own judgement about fairness, confidentiality, employment obligations and individual circumstances.

What transfers and what needs development

Strengths to demonstrate

  • Project understanding. Explain the pressures, role interfaces and resourcing needs of a construction team.
  • Stakeholder management. Use examples of listening, resolving conflicting priorities and recording agreed actions.
  • Analytical discipline. Cost and reporting experience can support workforce planning and people data quality.

Gaps to bridge

  • Learn the applicable employment framework, company policies, confidentiality and procedural fairness.
  • Build recruitment, onboarding, workforce planning and performance support capability.
  • Practise neutral interviewing, sensitive record keeping and escalation to experienced HR or legal advisers.

Start with a defined assignment

Possible first step: People operations or workforce coordination.

Coordinate an onboarding improvement or workforce planning exercise under an HR lead, using approved templates and limited access to the information required.

Set the boundaries and entry requirements

Do not independently conduct sensitive investigations, recommend dismissal or provide employment law advice through a trial. Escalate sensitive cases to experienced HR and legal personnel. Access employee records only where authorised and necessary.

Agree the HR training and experience required for the proposed duties. Confirm confidentiality, information access and any conflict with previous commercial or line management responsibilities.

Rehearse a realistic situation

A supervisor asks you to 'sort out' an employee who is frequently absent. You have only heard the supervisor's account. What should happen next?

Explore the reasoning

Clarify the request with the HR lead, preserve confidentiality and establish the facts through the appropriate process. Consider relevant policies and employment obligations before any recommendation. Do not pre judge the employee or turn a complaint into an immediate disciplinary outcome.

Bring evidence of progress

  • An onboarding workflow reviewed by HR that clarifies responsibilities and required checks.
  • A workforce plan with documented assumptions and controlled access to personal information.
  • An observed practice conversation demonstrating neutral questions, fair listening, clear records and timely escalation.

Agree the standard and reviewer before the assignment. Look for repeat performance, sound judgement and timely escalation. Keep workplace records in approved systems.

Build responsibility in stages

Learn and observeObserve people operations and study the policies and obligations relevant to the proposed work.
Apply under reviewDeliver a bounded onboarding or workforce task with HR review.

Agree the duration with your mentor. Progress depends on demonstrated capability, the work available and any formal requirements.

Make this workable for the business

Start with a people operations problem where construction knowledge is useful. Hand over commercial deadlines and provide an experienced HR sponsor with time to review the work.

Watch for this: Treating employee matters like subcontract negotiations, where winning a concession is the main measure of success.

Choose the work and agree the scope

Ask to observe routine tasks, deadlines, difficult conversations and accountability. Communication and judgement can transfer across roles; the work knowledge and required experience still need to be demonstrated. For a higher level within your discipline, use Role Progression and Promotion Readiness. A move can involve both a new discipline and greater responsibility.

Make the business case

The business may value your potential and still struggle to release you. Your manager loses someone productive now; the receiving team takes on learning time, supervision and uncertainty. Address both sides.

Why the business may hesitateUnderstand the cost, downtime and exposure behind the response.

Your move creates a resource decision for two teams. A clear plan helps them assess whether the development investment is practical.

Business concernWhat to put in your proposal
We need you in your current role.Name the duties to hand over, who will take them and the overlap required. Agree the release date and any backfill cost with the current manager.
You will be slower while learning.Start with a bounded task, a realistic time allowance and regular review. Agree which current duties reduce so the trial fits within the agreed workload.
Your mentor already has a full workload.Identify a willing mentor, reserve review time and include that time in the resourcing decision. Name a backup for leave or project pressure.
A mistake could cost us.Set out the first assignments, decisions reserved for authorised people, review before issue, access controls and the point at which the trial pauses.
There is no vacancy or budget.Identify a genuine workload need and the person who owns the budget. A learning placement can still be useful, but confirm whether a permanent role is actually available.
What if the move does not work?Agree a review date, evidence of progress and a fallback role or duties in writing. Confirm how pay, reporting and responsibilities would be handled.
How will we know the investment is worthwhile?Compare actual handover, training, mentor and backfill costs against useful output and a credible future resource need. Avoid assumed savings or a promised return without evidence.
Negotiate a defined trialMake the commitments clear for you, your manager and the receiving team.
  1. Define the destination. Use the actual job description. Agree whether this is exposure, a temporary secondment, a lateral move or a pathway into an entry role.
  2. Show relevant experience. Bring two or three work examples and be candid about the gaps. Ask the receiving manager what a competent first assignment looks like.
  3. Solve the release problem. Agree duties to stop or transfer, who covers them, overlap time and whose budget carries the transition.
  4. Agree the support. Name the mentor, reviewer and decision makers. Put supervised practice, learning time and required training into the plan.
  5. Protect the work and the person. Set authority limits, the review process and escalation triggers. Clarify hours, location, reporting, pay and the terms that apply during the trial.
  6. Set the decision. Agree review dates and observable evidence. Record the conditions for continuing, extending, narrowing the scope or returning to agreed duties.
Put employment terms in writing. A development arrangement does not remove applicable minimum employment entitlements. Have HR or payroll check the contract and any applicable award or enterprise agreement, including classification and any higher duties provisions. Fair Work guidance.
Structure the learning and reviewUse demonstrated progress to decide when responsibility can grow.

A 30, 60 and 90 day review pattern can help structure an initial trial. It is an example, not a promise that every transition can be completed in three months. Formal study and complex duties may require much longer.

First review: understand and prepareConfirm entry requirements, observe the work, identify gaps and complete a supervised practice task. Proceed when the mentor agrees the next live task is appropriate.
Second review: deliver under reviewComplete defined assignments with checks before issue or use. Review accuracy, reasoning, escalation and the actual support required.
Third review: decide the next scopeReview repeat performance and feedback from the people who rely on your work. Agree the next duties, further development or the fallback arrangement.

Evidence to discuss: work quality, sound reasoning, timely escalation, reliable delivery and learning from feedback. Include both managers’ and the employee’s perspectives. An attendance record or self rating alone is insufficient.

Pause or narrow the trial when required supervision is unavailable, repeated issues are not improving, current duties have not been released, or a task exceeds competence or authority. Resolve the cause and agree the next step before continuing that work.
Start the conversation and handle a noMake a practical request and find out what would change the decision.
“I would like to build towards this role. I can already bring these strengths, and I can see the gaps I need to close. Could we agree a defined assignment with a mentor, a handover of my current duties and a review date? I would like to understand what you would need to see to support the next step.”

If the answer is no, ask whether the issue is timing, coverage, budget, qualifications, performance or lack of a destination role. Each needs a different response.

  • Timing or coverage: propose a release after a defined milestone and ask for a date to revisit the decision.
  • Capability: ask for the specific gap, an example of the required standard and a supervised way to demonstrate it.
  • Qualifications: agree the required study or credential before committing to a pathway.
  • No funded position: clarify whether limited exposure or a secondment is possible and what it can realistically lead to.
  • No clear route after review: reassess the opportunity against your career priorities. If you consider another employer, check the actual duties, support and entry conditions before moving.

Keep the discussion specific. A constructive refusal with clear conditions is useful information. An indefinite promise needs a review date and an accountable decision maker.

Build your transition proposal

Turn the conversation into a clear draft. Explain the original ask, your early contribution, the value of retaining you and the support needed to make the move work.

Create a proposal to discuss with your managerChoose a pathway, define the support and download your draft.

Keep entries general and leave confidential employee or project details out. Download or copy your draft before leaving. This tool does not save a draft to your profile or send it to your employer.

You can use the pathway guides and write a proposal covering: current and target role; relevant experience; knowledge gaps; first assignment; current duties to hand over; mentor and review time; training and budget; authority limits; review evidence and dates; employment terms; and an agreed fallback. The interactive proposal builder appears here when it is available.

Where Buildit can help bridge the gap

Use these pathways to identify the missing knowledge, rehearse a realistic situation and agree the work that would demonstrate progress. Buildit can grow this into targeted learning modules, practical scenarios and evidence reviewed by a nominated sponsor. Formal qualifications, workplace supervision and the employer’s decision remain part of the pathway.
